Public comment extended for Purple Line environmental impact

WASHINGTON — The Purple Line remains on track in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties. But the book is not closed yet on public comments about the possible environmental impact of the light rail project.

The Army Corps of Engineers, Maryland Department of the Environment and Maryland Department of Natural Resources have extended the public comment period for the Purple Line until Dec. 2.

The project needs permits from each of the agencies, which are fielding comments about the possible impact on area waterways. The 16-mile project is within the Rock Creek, Anacostia and Potomac watersheds.

The past few weeks have seen geological studies on the proposed rail corridor and some drilling on the route to check underground conditions.

If all goes well for the Maryland Transit Administration, the trains will begin rolling in 2022.
