Midshipmen pull off biggest win of season against Houston

WASHINGTON — The Navy Midshipmen pulled off the biggest win of their season Saturday, beating the sixth-ranked Houston Cougars 46-40 in Annapolis.

It is arguably Navy’s biggest home win in program history. The Cougars were the highest ranked opponent to visit Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium since No.2 South Carolina visited Annapolis in 1984.

Navy quarterback Will Worth completed 3 of 5 passes for 76 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Worth also ran for 116 yards on 32 carries with a rushing TD as Navy improved to 4-1 on the year and 3-0 in the AAC.

Houston dropped to 5-1 on the year and 2-1 in conference play. The Cougars beat Navy 52-31 last season in Houston, before winning the inaugural AAC Championship and beating Florida State in the Peach Bowl. Houston opened this season with a 33-23 win over then-No.3 Oklahoma.

Navy defensive back Josiah Powell had two interceptions including a pick-six off Houston quarterback and Heisman Trophy candidate Greg Ward Jr. Ward had thrown just two interceptions in his first five games combined.

Tailgating Terps: U.Md. (and Penn State) fans gather for showdown

The Friday Night Lights shined over College Park, Maryland, as the Terps (2-1) and the No. 12-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions (3-0) kicked off on Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium, in what was the schools' first conference game of the season. As a Friday night college game is a delicious rarity, it was sold out. Classes were even canceled for the day. And because the opponent was from the neighboring state of (checks notes) Pennsylvania, much of that sold-out crowd were clad in (checks again) blue and white.
