Debris falls at Red Line station

WASHINGTON — Metro’s Red Line service is back to regular service after debris fell at one of its stations.

Metro says metal and debris fell from the ceiling at the Rhode Island Avenue station before 9 p.m. Wednesday.

In a statement released Thursday afternoon, Metro said the debris was a metal bracket that fell near an escalator at the station. Metro said the bolts had deteriorated due to exposure to the elements and salt used to keep the platform from getting icy.

Another similar bracket at the station has now been reinforced. Metro said neither primary structural supports.

Trains were forced to bypass the station last night until the system closed.

There were no injuries reported.

Service at the station has now resumed.

Editor’s note: This story has been updated to reflect that debris did not fall on the Metro tracks.
