WASHINGTON — It’s often controversial, but officials say an organized hunt is necessary to manage the growing deer population in Fairfax County.

On Tuesday night, Fairfax County will hold the first of two meetings in August, to detail plans to curtail the growing deer population. Officials will use archery, managed shotgun hunts and sharpshooting, starting in September.

Efforts will begin Sept. 10 and will run through Feb. 25. It will come under the oversight of the Fairfax County Police Department, along with the Fairfax County Park Authority and the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority.

The Fairfax County Police Department will carry out the sharpshooting operations in various parks in the evening from November through March 2017.

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the Fairfax Government Center in Conference Rooms 2 and 3. The second meeting will be held Tuesday, Aug. 16 at 7 p.m. at the Mount Vernon District Station.
