WASHINGTON — Police have arrested Demarko Wheeler, 20, in connection to the death of Alonzo Jackson, the Southeast D.C. man who was shot Wednesday morning at a gas station in Capitol Heights, Maryland.

Jackson, 68, had just filled up his car with gas when he was shot at about 7 a.m. The suspect then took off in his car. Jackson died from his injuries several hours later at a hospital.

Police found the stolen car Saturday afternoon, burned. It had been located in the area of Michigan Avenue and 14th Street in Northeast D.C.

Wheeler, a resident of Southeast D.C. from the 2000 block of Stanton Road, was arrested Sunday after police received a tip from a citizen. He has been charged with first-degree murder and related charges, according to Prince George’s County police.

Jackson’s family held a vigil Sunday night in his honor, and the arrest was announced there — as well as online.

Wheeler is still in the custody of D.C. police and awaits extradition to Prince George’s County.
