INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Dalai Lama is emphasizing how important it is to be kind in in what he describes as a violent world.

The 14th Dalai Lama of Tibetan Buddhism on Sunday gave the keynote address of the United States Conference of Mayors gathering in Indianapolis. He later discussed America’s role as a global leader.

The Indianapolis Star reports the Dalai Lama noted the U.S. has long been at the forefront of technological and scientific innovation. He added the time has come for the U.S. to promote compassion and love “in order to achieve a compassionate world.”

After the speech, the Dalai Lama was joined by Lady Gaga and businessman Philip Anschutz for a panel discussion. The pop singer spoke at length of the things that divide humans, including race, nationality and sexual orientation.
