Washington Monument reopens after elevator problem

WASHINGTON – The Washington Monument will reopen at 9 a.m. Wednesday, the National Park Service says.

The monument closed Tuesday afternoon after an elevator stopped at the top level, forcing dozens of visitors to walk down the stairs to get out. It was the fifth elevator problem to close the monument in the past year.

The park service says that the repair technicians have certified that the elevator is safe. They’re still waiting for a report on what caused the outage.
