Officials: Remains found inside Woodbridge townhouse after fire

WOODBRIDGE, Va. (AP) — Prince William County fire officials say human remains were found inside a Woodbridge townhouse after a fire.

The fire broke out early Wednesday at the home on Ponderosa Court and officials say three townhouses in the row have been deemed unsafe.

Initially, fire officials had determined that the resident of the townhouse was unaccounted for, but investigator later found remains inside the residence.

The remains are being taken to the Medical Examiner’s Office for identification.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but Fire Department Capt. Brian Ferguson said Wednesday evening that safety and stability problems were keeping investigators from accessing the townhouse.

Officials say six adults and three children were displaced and are being assisted by the Red Cross. Ferguson says one firefighter was taken to a hospital with a minor injury and released.
