WASHINGTON — Police are searching for the operator of a green, four-wheel, all-terrain vehicle decorated with skulls that struck and seriously injured a Maryland-National Capital Park Police officer on Sunday.

Police say the officer saw several riders of dirt bikes and ATVs breaking traffic laws and disrupting traffic in the vicinity of Allentown Road and Old Branch Avenue in the Camp Springs area. When some of the riders stopped in a parking lot on Old Branch Avenue, the officer attempted to question them.

“He stopped his vehicle and approached two of the occupants on ATVs and at one point the operator of one of them ran over and struck our officer. It appears to have been intentional,” says Maryland National Capital Park Police Chief Stanley Johnson.

While seriously hurt, the officer’s injuries are not life-threatening. Police have recovered the ATV, and also have an image of a person of interest.

“We’re hoping someone will have an idea who the vehicle operator is,” says Johnson.
