Virginia-bound Amtrak trains delayed more than 12 hours

WASHINGTON — Two Amtrak trains are experiencing heavy delays Saturday due to mechanical problems.

Trains #53 and #52, which operate between Lorton, Virginia and Sanford, Florida are experiencing delays of more than 12 hours.

According to Amtrak’s website, Train #52 was scheduled to arrive in Lorton at 8:59 a.m. Saturday. As of 4:45 p.m. Saturday, it is estimated to arrive at 9:49 p.m. — 12 hours and 50 minutes late.

Train #53 was scheduled to arrive in Lorton at 4 p.m.

Amtrak spokeswoman Chelsea Kopta tells WTOP that Train #53 was delayed for approximately 12 hours because of “mechanical problems including issues with the air dryer, air compressor and brakes.”

Kopta adds that the 328 passengers onboard were provided with food and drinks.

There are no reports of injuries.
