WASHINGTON — It sounds like a wild idea — a Gondola carrying  area residents and tourists over the Potomac River from Rosslyn to Georgetown and back again — but it could soon become reality.

The hope is that it would ease congestion on the Key Bridge, especially since, according to the Washington Post, some 50,000 vehicles cross the bridge every day.

Today the project is one step closer to getting a feasibility study off the ground.

On Thursday, the Arlington County board unanimously voted to kick in $35,000 towards that study, The Washington Post reports. The idea of a gondola has been talked about for a least a year. In May, D.C. contributed $35,000 to the study, which is needed to see if a gondola would help relieve congestion on the Key Bridge in a cost-effective way.

This study is expected to cost $250,000 and once it gets underway, it could take about 10 months.
