WASHINGTON — Among the events in the D.C. area celebrating the new year Thursday night will be a fireworks show that will light up the sky above the Potomac River.

It’s part of the First Night Alexandria event, in the Old Town area of Alexandria, Va.

“It’s going to be a great show tonight,” says Executive Director Ann Dorman.

“Think about the Fourth of July, when everything is going off for the last 2 minutes. We do that for 10 minutes.”

The fireworks begin as the clock strikes midnight.

First Night Alexandria also features music and other entertainment on indoor stages throughout the area.

There will be more than 100 performances throughout the event.
