SILVER SPRING, Md. — The Maryland General Assembly will not be back in session until mid-January, but state lawmakers from Montgomery County are already working on a bill that would allow alcohol sales at a county sports stadium.

Under the measure, the Maryland SoccerPlex, in Germantown, would be able to obtain a license to sell beer and wine.

“The SoccerPlex is looking at expanding the number and different types of events, possibly also looking at having concerts,” said Del. Charlie Barkley, the bill’s sponsor.

The alcohol license would allow the SoccerPlex to sell beer and wine 30 minutes before the start of a game up until the final period.

“Increasingly, the Maryland SoccerPlex is operating independently, and looking for additional sources of revenue,” said Charles Washington, of the Maryland Soccer Foundation, which owns and operates the SoccerPlex.

The annual fee for the alcohol license would be set at $2,000.
