Police identify man with knife who was killed by police

WASHINGTON — The Howard County Police Department has identified a man who was shot and killed by a police officer Friday morning as 19-year-old Gary Carmona Boitano of Hyattsville.

Police received a call around 10:40 a.m. claiming a man was in a home on Cardinal Lane in Columbia, wielding a knife and threatening to kill the caller. When officers got to the home, they were confronted by Boitano in the driveway with the knife still in his hand.

The officer, who has been with the department for eight years, has been placed on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.
