Swastikas painted on Montgomery Co. speed cameras, sign

WASHINGTON — Police are searching for a suspect who painted green swastikas on two Montgomery County speed cameras and a neighborhood sign earlier this week.

Montgomery County Police say they were driving through Olney, Maryland, on Wednesday morning and spotted a large green-colored swastika painted on a speed camera along Olney Laytonsville Road near Headwaters Drive.

After checking the surrounding area, police located a second green-colored swastika — this time on a speed camera on westbound Olney Laytonsville Road just before Spartan Road.

Later than morning, police received a call from a resident who told them there was a green swastika on the “Flower Valley” neighborhood entrance sign in the area of Norbeck Road and Westbury Road in Rockville.

Investigators say they believe the incidents are related.

Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett says the vandalism is an act of hate that shouldn’t be tolerated.

“I stand with all of our neighbors in Olney and Rockville condemning this activity in the strongest possible terms, and I know our Montgomery County Police Department is doing all it can to find and apprehend those responsible,” Leggett said in a statement.

Investigators are asking anyone who may have information about the vandalism or the suspects involved to call police at 240-773-5530.
