Officer who fatally shot John Geer no longer works for Fairfax County

WASHINGTON — The Fairfax County police officer who shot and killed an unarmed man in his doorway in August 2013 is no longer employed by the police department.

Officer Adam Torres is no longer an employee at the Fairfax County Police Department, the department announced Friday afternoon. A grand jury is deciding whether to indict Torres, a nine-year veteran, in the death of John Geer. Torres has not been charged.

In August 2013, Fairfax County police officers responded to a domestic dispute call at Geer’s Springfield home and arrived to find him at his front door, unarmed and unwilling to leave his house.

After a standoff, court documents say Torres shot Geer in the chest and killed him.

Fellow officers on the scene and other witnesses said Geer was holding his hands above his head at the time, according to court documents.

Earlier this year, the county board approved a $2.95 million settlement that went to Geer’s two teenage daughters.

The county’s chief of police will have a statement regarding Torres’ departure at the conclusion of the grand jury deliberations.

Fairfax Co. seeks to exempt Potomac River to protect water if Va. declares drought emergency

Northern Virginia remains under a drought watch, and Fairfax County leaders want to make sure there’s enough drinking water to go around if Virginia declares a drought emergency. The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors authorized Chairman Jeff McKay to write to Governor Abigail Spanberger, to request that the Potomac River be excluded from a Virginia drought-specific declaration, since Fairfax Water is dependent on the Potomac as its drinking water supply.
