Grand jury hears testimony in death of John Geer

WASHINGTON — He was shot and killed in the doorway of his Virginia home by a Fairfax County, Virginia police officer. Now a grand jury is hearing testimony in the case of John Geer’s death.

It was late August 2013 when Fairfax County police officers responded to a domestic dispute call at John Geer’s Springfield home and arrived to find him at his front door, unarmed and unwilling to leave his house.

After an hourslong standoff, court documents say Officer Adam D. Torres shot Geer in the chest and killed him.

Fellow officers on the scene and other witnesses said Geer was holding his hands above his head at the time, according to court documents.

A grand jury will decide whether to indict Torres, a nine-year veteran, who has not been charged. The court-appointed grand jury was presented with evidence in the case in March.

Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Ray Morrogh says prosecutors have subpoenaed at least 20 witnesses who will testify this week.

Earlier this year, the county board approved a $2.95 million settlement that went to Geer’s two teenage daughters.
