WASHINGTON — A golf tournament scheduled for Monday afternoon in Ashburn, Virginia, is expected to raise more than $20,000 for meningitis research and scholarships and will honor an 18-year-old girl who died from the illness earlier this year.

The fundraiser was planned by the family of Madison Small, a Loudoun County teen who died from the bacterium that causes meningitis in April.

Tim Small, Madison’s father, tells NBC4 that 130 golfers signed up for the tournament and 200 guests are expected for a dinner and silent auction at a golf club in Ashburn.

“It will be a celebration of Madison and people doing something positive in honor of Madison and her life,” Small writes in an email obtained by WTOP.

Madison was a senior at Broad Run High School, where she was captain of the softball team.
