WASHINGTON — Access to portions of Route 606 and Route 28  in Virginia was restricted into Monday evening, as crews cleaned up hot tar and diesel fuel that spewed onto the roadway after a tanker overturned in the morning. The Route 28 ramp to eastbound Route 606 and the westbound Route 606 ramp leading to northbound Route 28 were impacted,  the Loudoun County Sheriff’s office tweeted.

At 9:16 a.m., police responded to a single-vehicle crash on northbound Route 28 at Route  606. A tanker truck crashed and overturned, causing its tank — loaded with hot tar — to rupture. The crash also damaged the truck’s fuel tanks,  a spokeswoman with Virginia State Police said. The driver suffered minor injuries, police said. The spills have been contained, but clean up of the tar and diesel fuel extended the lane closures.
