WASHINGTON — A crash involving a Maryland State Police trooper caused traffic delays on Interstate 95 in Howard County Wednesday.

A vehicle hit a state trooper who was on a traffic stop on southbound I-95 between the exits for Route 32 and Route 175  in Jessup, Maryland, around 3 p.m.

The crash caused the southbound lanes to close in the area. All lanes reopened at about 7 p.m.

Police say the trooper was airlifted to Shock Trauma in Baltimore. A Howard County Fire and Rescue spokesman says the trooper was transported with critical injuries, but is now in stable condition.

Two other people were injured in the crash, and are expected to be OK, Maryland State Police say.

According to Maryland State Police, the driver of the vehicle that hit the trooper is a civilian employee of the Maryland State Police, and was driving a vehicle register to the department.

Maryland State Police say the trooper has been with the force since 2012.
