WASHINGTON — It features 12,000 athletes from 70 countries competing in more than 60 sports, and it’s coming to the D.C. area beginning this weekend. One of the largest sporting events in the world, the World Police & Fire Games pits professional public safety athletes against one another in friendly competitions, which are open to the public. The last time the games were held in the U.S. was 2011. Previous incarnations took place in Australia, Sweden, Spain and Northern Ireland. The events themselves run through Sunday, July 5, with the Opening Ceremony at RFK Stadium kicking things off Friday night. All events are free of charge to the viewing public, although events like boxing and bodybuilding have a complimentary ticket distribution system, as the venue capacity at the George Mason Center for the Arts requires it. As you can see on the interactive map, the bulk of the events will take place in Fairfax County. But they will leak into Loudoun, Prince William and Stafford counties as well, and Dragon Boat competitions will launch from the Maryland side of the Potomac River at National Harbor.
