Howard County police warn resident about possibly rabid raccoon

WASHINGTON — Howard County police are warning residents in the Allview neighborhood of Columbia, Maryland about a possibly rabid raccoon.

Police wrote on their Facebook page Sunday that they have received several complaints about the animal in the last 24 hours.

The raccoon was spotted near the Patuxent Branch Trail, the 10200 block of Wayover Way and teh 6700 block of Flapjack Lane.

Police warn that if residents spot a staggering raccoon, oblivious to nearby noise, or otherwise erratic they should leave the area and call 911.

For the first time, early warning sirens sounded in historic Ellicott City on Monday evening, triggered by a flash flood warning from the National Weather Service. Despite almost two inches of rain in a one hour period, no serious damage was sustained in Maryland's flood-prone tourist destination, which suffered devastating floods in 2016 and 2018.
