WASHINGTON — Northbound lanes of George Washington Parkway reopen at Spout Run Parkway. The right lane is closed after Va. 123.

WASHINGTON — Crews are working to clean up the debris, oil and diesel fuel spilled on northbound George Washington Parkway after a tour bus experienced a “major engine problem” Wednesday night.

The bus accident, north of Va. 123, occurred after 9:30 p.m., says U.S. Park Police Sgt. Lelani Woods.

Woods apologized for the inconvenience that commuters of the heavily traveled road experienced, but didn’t know when the parkway would reopen. Southbound is unaffected.

Traffic is diverted onto the Spout Run Parkway. There is no access to the parkway from Va. 123.

Woods says while Fairfax Fire and Rescue has been on the scene helping clean up the spill, the U.S. Park Service had to wait for the proper maintenance crew to come in.

“Getting the right maintenance person and the right equipment on scene takes time,” Woods said on WTOP.

When the accident occurred, Park Police say no one was taken to the hospital.
