Virginia, Maryland rank high in ‘Bicycle Friendly State’ survey

WASHINGTON — Virginia and Maryland both rank high in The League of American Bicyclists annual Bicycle Friendly State survey.

Maryland snagged the No. 10 spot while Virginia came in at 13.

The criteria for scoring included legislation and enforcement, policies and programs, infrastructure and funding, education and encouragement and evaluation and planning.

Out of 100 points, Maryland scored 49 and Virginia scored 47.2

Last year, Virginia ranked 18th on the survey, moving up five spots for this year’s ranking.

While Maryland still outscores Virginia, its ranking fell from 7th in 2014 to No. 10 this year.

Washington state, Minnesota and Delaware took the top three spots. Kansas, Kentucky and Alabama place in the bottom.

The District of Columbia wasn’t included in the survey.
