WASHINGTON – It’s four years late and $50 million dollars over budget, but the Silver Spring Transit Center should be completed in June.

But that doesn’t mean the transit hub will open to the public in June. First, Metro has to approve the facility for service.

At a briefing with reporters last week, Montgomery County Council President George Leventhal said the county expects to turn the center over to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority in June for its 60-day site review.

Once accepted, Metro will take over operations of the structure that’s suffered years of delays and cost overruns. That means it could be late summer or early fall before the transit hub in downtown Silver Spring actually opens to the public.

The total cost of the project is $140 million dollars.
