Tax Day is just around the corner, which means a busy time is ahead for everyone involved in the process. For some, it’s a period filled with dread. For others, it can be a productive opportunity to put their math, business and law skills to good use.
If you’re in the latter category, you’re in luck. The Scholarship Coach has gathered up several scholarships for aspiring finance professionals. Whether you’ve already paid Uncle Sam or are just getting started with your taxes, taking additional time to research scholarships this tax season can help pave the way for your financial and educational success.
Jobs within this field vary quite a bit. The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists everything from credit counselors to personal financial advisors as possible career paths. They note that finance professions have gotten more complex over the years, but that also means they’ve become more lucrative.

If financial analysis, organization and teamwork are your bread and butter, a career in accounting may be for you. Professional associations like the National Society for Accountants can connect you to the broader accounting community and aid in your education.
In particular, the organization’s scholarship foundation supports aspiring and current accountants. U.S. and Canadian college undergrads can apply through the foundation’s online system. If you’re majoring in accounting and have at least a 3.0 GPA, be on the lookout for the next application cycle. Last year’s applications were accepted between January and March, with awards ranging from $500 to $2,200.
Another group worth researching is the American Institute of CPAs, which is billed as the world’s largest accounting association. The association offers several different scholarships, including the AICPA John L. Carey Scholarship Award.

This award is a little different, as it’s geared toward graduate students who didn’t study an accounting-related major during their undergrad years. The scholarship helps those who are interested in pursuing accounting and the certified public accountant licensure that goes along with the profession. Up to five students receive $5,000 each.

If you’re more interested in a financial planning career, the TD Ameritrade Institutional NextGen Scholarship can help get you there. Twelve scholarships are available to college freshmen, sophomores or juniors who are pursuing their financial planning degree. Of the 12 scholarships, two will be diversity scholarships given to students who come from underrepresented groups in the profession.

In addition to submitting school transcripts and a letter of reference from a personal or academic contact, the application requires an essay that outlines your motivations for wanting to pursue a financial planning career. While many scholarship programs have already closed for the season, this one is still open. Apply by June 1 to be considered for the $5,000 award.
Finance careers aren’t limited to just numbers. They also require strong communication skills, whether that means making recommendations to individuals about their personal finances or helping others make sense of their financial records.
For those who have complex tax questions, having a strong tax attorney on your side is crucial. To that end, the Theodore Tannenwald Jr. Foundation for Excellence in Tax Scholarship offers future tax lawyers a chance to exercise their analytic skills by submitting papers on any federal or state tax-related topic.
Part-time or full-time undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to apply, with each paper submission sponsored by a law school professor. Papers can range from 25 to 50 double-spaced pages, with the top three submissions awarded $5,000, $2,500 or $1,500 in cash prizes. Fortunately, there’s still time to craft or refine your paper: The deadline for submissions is July 1.
