WASHINGTON — Metro is back to running trains on all tracks of the Orange and Silver lines after two cracked rails caused problems during the bitter cold Friday morning.

The cracked rail was reported just after Metro opened at 5 a.m.

Metro ran trains on a single track through East Falls Church before Metro tweeted that riders should consider alternate travel options west of Ballston. At one point, there was no train service between McLean and Ballston.

Five minutes after making the recommendation in the 6 a.m. hour, Metro said train service was restored to a single track.

Additionally, later in the morning, an Orange Line train also had problems with a door, while a Shady Grove-bound train had to offload passengers at Judiciary Square because of a mechanical problem.

On Virginia Railway Express, both the Fredericksburg and Manassas lines were delayed due to switch problems.

VRE Trains 321 and 330 were canceled due to earlier switch issue.

Other trains were delayed as much as 45 minutes.

The temperature was around 5 degrees Friday and expected to reach about 15 later in the day.
