Tow truck driver killed on Beltway shoulder

WASHINGTON – All lanes of the Outer Loop were closed on Monday morning after a tow truck driver was killed when he was hit by a box truck.

Najdi Hicham, 45, of Centreville, Va., was stopped on the shoulder, outside of his tow truck, prepping to tow an unattended vehicle when a box truck crossed into the shoulder near Exit 49 and struck him.  He died on the scene, according to Virginia State Police.

The Beltway was closed for several hours following the incident.

The driver of the box truck, Anthony Custis, 34, was charged with reckless driving and was cited for holding a mobile phone while operating a commercial vehicle.

Neither Custis nor his passenger were injured.
