Water main break closes three D.C. schools

UPDATE 10:43 p.m. 12/18/2014: DC Public Schools announced Thursday night that the Cleveland, Garrison and Seaton Elementary Schools are still closed for students and staff on Friday. Students and staff at the Duke Ellington High School should report to the Meyer campus only.

EARLIER: WASHINGTON — A water main break in Northwest D.C. has caused three schools to close Thursday.

Cleveland, Garrison and Seaton elementary schools are closed for students and staff Thursday.

Additionally, students and staff from Duke Ellington High School will all report only to the Meyer campus Thursday.

All other District of Columbia Public Schools are open as scheduled.

D.C. Water  has issued a do-not-drink advisory for a six-block stretch of Northwest after a petroleum smell in the water was reported Wednesday afternoon.

Initial testing at Cleveland Elementary School found contamination in the water. Authorities plan to continue testing the water, the Associated Press reported.

D.C. Water says it hopes regular water service will be restored by noon.
