Water main break closes Massachusetts Avenue

WASHINGTON — A water main break forced the closure of Massachusetts Avenue in Bethesda on Friday evening. Southbound lanes reopened overnight but northbound lanes remain closed from Westmoreland Circle at the Maryland/D.C. line and Duvall Drive for repair crews.

The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission said a 12-inch water main broke, flooding the street with water. The pipe was installed in 1934.

It could be Saturday before the road completely reopens and 60 homes in the affected area are without water.

Motorists should try to avoid the area particularly overnight with cold temperatures that could dip and cause icy conditions.
