WASHINGTON — Two 17-year-old varsity high school football players at Briar Woods High School in Ashburn, Virginia, face assault and battery charges for an October locker room incident involving a junior varsity player.
“They’re juvenile charges,” Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman tells WTOP, who did not identify the suspects, because of their age.
The incident happened after school on Oct. 9, according to the the sheriff’s department.
“I can’t really specify exactly what happened because this involves juveniles and we’re limited as to what we can disclose,” says Chapman.
In general terms, Chapman says assault and battery involves “physical contact between someone who is charged and a victim.”
“They’re going to go before a Juvenile and Domestic Court judge, there will be a hearing,” says Chapman.
Another allegedly occurred Oct. 14. Both were reported to the school resource officer Oct. 17.
The investigation centered on three varsity and two junior varsity players, The Washington Post reports.
No charges were filed in Oct. 14 incident. The sheriff’s office says the second possible victim opted not to press charges.
“After the thorough investigation and a review of the investigation with the Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney, it was determined that the allegations did not meet the criteria of hazing as defined in the Virginia state code,” a news release from the sheriff’s office says.
The two have not been playing since Oct. 17, The Washington Post reports.
The Falcons have won four state titles in the last five years.
