GREENBELT, Md. (AP) — A Virginia man has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud in the theft of more than $1 million from a Washington, D.C.-based company.

Prosecutors say 42-year-old Brian Hooper of Woodbridge, Virginia pleaded guilty Thursday in federal court in Greenbelt, Maryland.

Prosecutors say between 2008 and last year, Hooper and another employee at FTI Consulting conspired with two non-employees to pose as clients to receive refund checks from the company worth more than $1 million. The company’s practice was to issue refund checks to clients in certain circumstances, such as when a retainer exceeded the amount of work the company performed.

Hooper faces up to 20 years in prison at his February sentencing. The other three defendants all have pleaded guilty and are set to be sentenced in January.
