RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia is awarding a series of grants to preserve historic Civil War battlefields.
Gov. Terry McAuliffe said Friday that the 13 grants will help protect nearly 277 acres at 10 battlefields across the state.
The grants are from the Civil War Sites Preservation Fund that was established by the General Assembly as a permanent fund in 2010.
More than $1.17 million is being awarded by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources this year.
The grant recipients are the Brandy Station Foundation, Civil War Trust, Manassas Battlefield Trust, Piedmont Environmental Council and the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation.
Officials say the awards will assist in protecting land associated with battles in Culpeper, Dinwiddie, Henrico, Caroline, Fauquier, Prince William and Frederick counties.
