Community development grant awarded in Va.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia has awarded $300,000 in community development funding to a regional alliance in the southern part of the state.

Gov. Terry McAuliffe said the grant is being awarded to the Virginia Growth Alliance.

The regional group is comprised of Mecklenburg, Amelia, Brunswick, Buckingham, Charlotte, Cumberland, Greensville, Lunenburg, Nottoway and Prince Edward counties, as well as the city of Emporia.

Officials say the grant will be used to develop several new programs for youth, new businesses and established businesses throughout the region to spur small business development and create jobs.

The federally-funded Community Development Block Grant program is administered by the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development. Virginia gets up to $17 million annually for the program.
