High-speed rail meetings planned in Virginia

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The Virginia Department of Public Transportation is holding public meetings as part of the process for developing a high-speed rail corridor.

The first of four meetings is set for Wednesday in Ashland. Additional meetings are set for Richmond on Thursday and in Quantico and Arlington next week.

The meetings are part of the environmental impact statement process for development of high-speed rail from Washington, D.C., to Richmond.

The project would provide higher speed intercity passenger rail service along the 123-mile rail corridor along the Interstate 95 corridor between Arlington County and Chesterfield County.

Officials say the rail corridor is the northernmost segment of the Southeast High Speed Rail Corridor, which stretches southward from Washington, D.C through Richmond to Raleigh and Charlotte, North Carolina.
