Hurricane Vance begins to weaken in Pacific

MIAMI (AP) — Hurricane Vance is beginning to weaken as it swirls in the Pacific off the coast of Mexico.

The hurricane’s maximum sustained winds early Tuesday have decreased to near 105 mph (165 kph) with additional weakening forecast over the next day or so. The U.S. National Hurricane Center says Vance could weaken to a tropical storm by the time it reaches Mexico’s coast.

A tropical storm watch is in effect for Mexico’s coast from Mazatlan to Topolobampo.

Vance is centered about 405 miles (650 kilometers) southwest of Mazatlan and is moving north-northeast near 13 mph (20 kph).

Rainfall caused by Vance is expected to total 4 to 8 inches with isolated amounts near 12 inches through Wednesday. The rains could produce life-threatening flash floods and mud slides.
