Ex-prep football star sentenced to more jail time

DETROIT (AP) — A former Detroit prep football star has been sentenced to more jail time for violating probation after his conviction for assaulting a school security guard.

Prosecutors say 17-year-old Jayru Campbell assaulted his 17-year-old girlfriend in a stairwell at Cass Technical High School on Sept. 12. That’s the same day he left jail after serving a sentence for body-slamming a security officer in his school.

Campbell learned his punishment on Tuesday in Wayne County Circuit Court. The sentence is seven months in jail with credit for 98 days already served. He earlier pleaded guilty to violating probation.

In court, he asked the judge not to give up on him.

Campbell is awaiting a Friday hearing on a domestic violence charge from the Sept. 12 incident.
