RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Republican Dave Brat has followed up his stunning primary victory over then-House Majority Leader Eric Cantor by winning the congressional seat in Virginia.

Brat defeated Democrat Jack Trammell in central Virginia’s strongly Republican 7th District on Tuesday. Brat and Trammell both teach at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland.

In June, Brat rode a wave of tea party support to an upset of Cantor, the second-ranking member of the House of Representatives. Brat campaigned in the general election as an opponent of most of President Barack Obama’s policies, including the health care overhaul. He also emphasized his experience as an economics professor, suggesting he would be the best choice to help improve the economy.

Trammell, a sociology professor, portrayed himself as a bipartisan consensus-builder.
