UN: More than 1,200 Iraqis killed in October

BAGHDAD (AP) — The United Nations says violence claimed the lives of at least 1,273 Iraqis in October.

The U.N. mission in Baghdad says 856 civilians and 417 members of Iraq’s security forces were killed and more than 2,000 were wounded in attacks. The hardest-hit city was Baghdad, with 379 civilians killed.

The figures don’t take into account casualties in some parts of Iraq under militant control. That includes Anbar province, where officials say at least 50 tribesmen and women were lined up and shot dead late Friday in the latest mass killing by Islamic State militants.

The October death toll is up slightly from September, when the U.N. says 1,119 Iraqis were killed.
