Longshot Take Charge Brandi wins Juv Fillies

ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) — Take Charge Brandi won the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies by a half-length, pulling the upset at 61-1 odds for Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas.

The 79-year-old trainer is the career leader in both Cup victories with 20 and purse earnings. Lukas was already the oldest trainer to win a Cup race two years ago when Hightail won the Juvenile Sprint.

Ridden by Victor Espinoza, Take Charge Brandi ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:41.95 and paid $125.40, $51.40 and $24.80 on the second day of the world championships Saturday at Santa Anita.

Top Decile returned $7.20 and $5.40, while Wonder Gal was another half-length back in third and paid $9.40.

It was Lukas’ sixth career win in the race.
