STRASBURG, Va. (AP) — Grain production is down in Virginia this year.

According to the Northern Virginia Daily (http://bit.ly/1zQZ8SQ ), the National Agricultural Statistics Service reports winter wheat production declined 2 percent from 2013, with 1.7 million bushels harvested. Farmers planted and harvested fewer acres, but managed to get 68 bushels per acre — a six-bushel increase over 2013.

Barley production totaled 2.21 million bushels, a 39 percent drop from last year’s crop. However, Virginia did see a 67 percent increase in oats harvested, totaling 234,000 bushels.

Herman Ellison of the statistics service says grain production is generally dependent on the price the grain sells for and how well the farmer did the year before.
