Nats exercise option on Span; decline on LaRoche, Soriano

WASHINGTON — The Washington Nationals exercised a $9 million team option on outfielder Denard Span for the 2015 season on Thursday.

Span served as the team’s primary leadoff hitter and center fielder, where he racked up a career-high and National League leading 184 hits this season.

As expected, the Nats declined a $15 million mutual options on infielder Adam LaRoche and a $14 million team option on right-handed relief pitcher Rafael Soriano. LaRoche will receive a $2 million buyout.

The team now has more than $96 million in salary commitments for next season, not including all arbitration-eligible players.
