WASHINGTON — A father has been banned from a Charles County, Maryland school after a dispute over his daughter’s World History class homework assignment.
Kevin Wood told FOX5 he was banned from La Plata High School after he objected to a three-page assignment asking students to examine Islam. Wood, a veteran, told FOX5 he and his wife believe religion should not be taught in schools, and Islam should not get priority over other religions.
“We cannot discuss our Ten Commandments at school, but they can discuss Islam’s Five Pillars,” Melissa Wood, Kevin’s wife, said to FOX5.
Kevin Wood said he went to the high school to speak with the vice principal, and that’s when it turned into an argument. School spokesperson Katie O’Malley-Simpson said he was threatening to cause a disruption, but Wood told FOX5 that was not the case.
Wood was banned from the school, which is defending the homework assignment.
“We’re not teaching religion, we’re teaching world history,” a O’Malley- Simpson told FOX5.
The Woods and school officials are talking about the dispute in the hopes of coming to a resolution.
