Johnson opposes resolution on Redskins name

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota Republican candidate for governor Jeff Johnson has voted against a Hennepin County resolution calling on the owners of the Washington Redskins to change the team’s name.

Johnson cast the lone “no” in the county board’s 6-1 vote approving the resolution Tuesday.

Johnson says he understands people are upset about the name “Redskins” but doesn’t believe it’s the board’s role to get involved in the debate over the team’s name.

Minnesota Public Radio News (http://bit.ly/1u4G7ti ) reports several other board members objected to Johnson’s stance. They say county government has a role in sending a message to Washington team owner Dan Snyder that they believe the name is racist.

Several thousand people are expected to protest when the Minnesota Vikings play Washington in an NFL game at the University of Minnesota on Sunday.
