NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (AP) — Central Connecticut star guard Kyle Vinales has been arrested after his girlfriend accused him of striking her while the two were fighting.
Vinales a 6-foot-1 junior from Detroit, was charged Thursday with third-degree assault and disorderly conduct.
Vinales and his girlfriend were returning from dinner when they began arguing over a cell phone, according to a release Tuesday from the New Britain police department.
“The argument escalated and Vinales allegedly punched the victim in the forehead and squeezed her forehead to the point where it caused her pain,” police said. “Officers observed a bump and scratches to the victim’s forehead.”
He appeared in court Friday and his case was referred to a family relations officer, according to the Judicial Branch website. He is due back in court on Dec. 5.
A message seeking comment was left Tuesday with his public defender.
Athletic Department spokesman Tom Pincince says Vinales is not participating in team activities currently, but declined to elaborate.
Vinales was the team’s leading scorer last season, averaging 17.2 points and reaching 1,000 points faster than any player in school history. He also led the team with 113 assists and had 42 steals.
