RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The American College of Radiology Association’s political action committee is spending more than $50,000 in an independent effort to help Democrat Mark Warner win re-election to the U.S. Senate.

New campaign finance forms filed Wednesday show the group spending the money on fliers to promote Warner, who is facing off against GOP challenger Ed Gillespie.

The northern Virginia-based PAC spent nearly $23,000 earlier this year trying unsuccessfully to help U.S. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor in a Republican primary.

Ted Burnes, director of the PAC, said Cantor’s loss showed that “nothing can be assumed in today’s political climate” and the group is helping Warner because he has worked in a bipartisan fashion on health care issues.

Polls have shown Warner leading Gillespie.
