Va. Beach wants lost, stolen guns reported

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — Virginia Beach’s City Council wants the General Assembly to require owners to report lost or stolen guns.

Media outlets report that the proposal is part of the city’s legislative agenda. Council members approved the agenda on Tuesday.

The city’s proposal would impose a civil fine for failing to report lost or stolen guns within two days of realizing the firearms were missing.

Police chief Jim Cervera requested the proposal. He says it would make reuniting gun owners with their property easier.

Cervera says the proposal isn’t a gun control initiative.
