Navy sailor medevaced off ship to hospital

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) — A sailor aboard the USS Barry was taken by a Coast Guard helicopter to a Navy hospital in Portsmouth.

The Coast Guard says the 36-year-old man was experiencing chest pains early Wednesday morning.

Watchstanders aboard the guided-missile destroyer requested assistance from the Coast Guard.

A Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew was launched from Air Station Elizabeth City, North Carolina, and arrived on scene about 40 miles east of Virginia Beach.

The aircrew lowered a rescue swimmer and a rescue basket, then hoisted the patient to the helicopter.

The man was taken to Naval Medical Center Portsmouth.
