CROWN POINT, Ind. (AP) — Authorities say investigators can no longer interview a man suspected of killing seven women in Indiana unless they first get his permission through his attorney.

A magistrate judge imposed a gag order at a Wednesday hearing at the Lake County Jail in northwestern Indiana, where Darren Vann is being held following his weekend arrest.

Wednesday’s hearing was Vann’s initial appearance on charges of killing 19-year-old Afrikka Hardy. Vann has been cooperative since his arrest and led investigators to six other bodies in Gary.

Vann refused to answers questions at the hearing, including whether his name is Darren Vann. Judge Kathleen Sullivan held Vann in contempt and imposed the gag order.

It’s unclear if Vann will now refuse to talk or if he might continue to agree to be questioned.
