KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (AP) — Hurricane Ana is carving a path south of Hawaii this morning, producing high waves, strong winds and heavy rains that have prompted a flood advisory.
The National Weather Service says the Category 1 hurricane is passing about 170 miles southwest of the Big Island and about 225 miles from Honolulu.
Forecasters say there’s little chance for hurricane conditions on the islands, but a tropical storm watch remains in effect and the strongest winds are about 80 mph. The weather service also issued a flood advisory for the Big Island.
Waves are expected to crest to 10 to 15 feet on both the North and South shores of Hawaii’s islands late today and to remain tall through Sunday.
The National Weather Service says rain has been falling in some areas at a rate of 2 to 3 inches an hour. However, the weather service says it has had no reports of flooding so far.
